The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Saturday launched the construction of a Chinese-contracted major road project in western Ethiopia’s Jimma zone.
Ahmed, accompanied by senior government officials, on Saturday witnessed the corner-stone laying ceremony for the 94 km project, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported on Saturday.
The project came as the Ethiopian government aspires to connect strategic towns in western Ethiopia that cut through Jimma zone and three districts that are Mana, Limmu Kosa and Limmu Seka in Ethiopia’s largest Oromia regional state.
The road project is expected to be completed within four years.
In December last year, the Ethiopian premier had also witnessed a corner-stone laying ceremony for another Chinese-contracted major road project in the Jimma zone that will connect strategic towns in western Ethiopia, including the historic town of Jimma as well as the Agaro and Dedesa towns.
Jimma town and its surroundings, known as the major source of Ethiopia’s major export commodity coffee, are considered as an integral part of Ethiopia’s recently improved export sector. The construction of the two high-quality road projects are expected to spur coffee trading in Ethiopia. Enditem
