By Nafeesa Saini - Cafes may be a dime dozen now, but a new entrant to the scene is set to shake up the third wave of the coffee boom in Singapore. Opening soon at ION Orchard is Bacha Coffee House, the first international outpost outside of its Marrakech origins. Founded in 1910, the original cafe is returning after a 60-year hiatus. It has a palatial past that took root in its homeground of Dar el Bacha, a palace hidden away in the medina (old city) of Marrakech. The palace was the residence of high-ranking official Thami El Glaoui. This was later refurbished and converted into the Museum of Cultural Confluences.
Like the majestic riads of Morocco, this one would leave you slack-jawed with its Moorish-style opulence. Amidst the swaying palms and ornate zellige mosaics under carved cedar wood ceilings, guests dine on the resplendent patios decked with overstuffed armchairs with the inviting, comforting scent of coffee wafting in the air.
Its interiors aside, the coffee brews here are exquisitely fine-flavoured. The beans are directly sourced from coffee planters and farmers, and then hand-roasted before gently air-cooled to preserve its taste.
Over at its Singapore outpost, its 30-seat coffee room in ION Orchard serves up 200 brews, served hot or iced in gooseneck Bacha posts, with the brand’s signature whipped cream, steamed milk, raw sugar, and cracked vanilla bean. Select from single origin coffees, fine flavoured or blended coffees, and naturally CO₂ decaffeinated coffees harvested by farmers from as far as Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Can’t decide on a brew? Specialists are on hand to guide you according to your taste buds and preferences. Nibble while you sip, with its menu of dishes infused with notes of coffee that includes sweet and savoury croissants.
With its mall location, it will lack the original coffee room’s majestic architecture. Yet the space more than makes up for it with its design accents. Around bistro-style tables are wicker chairs outfitted in rich velvet tones placed on black-and-white marble flooring. The sense of resplendence is replicated with geometric patterned latticework, brass chandeliers. Shelves in carved natural wood house the large square canisters in Bacha Coffee’s signature saffron.
