RABAT, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan city of Tangier will start teaching Mandarin Chinese in a primary school in a bid to improve educational skills.

A partnership agreement was signed on Tuesday between the BMCE Foundation for Education and Environment and the Confucius Institute of Abdelmalek Essaadi University to teach Mandarin to students of the school of Boujdour, said a statement by BMCE Foundation on Wednesday.

Mandarin lessons will be offered in the first stage to classes of the fifth and sixth grade of the primary school, the statement added.

Chinese language is being introduced given Mandarin's growing global rise and the deepening political and economic connections between Tangier region and China, said Mezian Benjelloun, director of BMCE foundation, during the signing ceremony.

The teaching of Mandarin in Tangier will have a long range in the perspective of the construction of the industrial city, which is under development thanks to the Moroccan-Chinese partnership, she added.

Zhao Jiangping, wife of the Chinese ambassador to Morocco, said language is a vector of culture and knowledge, noting by learning the Chinese language Moroccan students will get more opportunities in their academic and professional career.

The teaching of Mandarin officially started in Morocco when the first Confucius Institute in the country was established in 2009 at Mohammed V University in the capital Rabat.

Two other Confucius Institutes were established in the universities of Casablanca and Tangier, while the cities of Agadir and Kenitra have two sub centers.
